2019 India Yoga Safari

Our yoga tour through Rajasthan was a deep immersion into both city and rural Rajasthan. During our visit to Jodhpur we did a jeep safari to the nearby Bishnoi village. The Bishnoi’s are a community of Rajasthan who are famous for their rich cultural Rajasthani life and their true love for nature and animals. We were given a glimpse of rich cultural life of Bishnoi Villages and true Rajasthan. Bishnois are strong lovers of wild animals. if you are a hunter, then the worst thing that could happen to you is to be caught hunting by a Bishnoi. Unlike most Hindu communities, Bishnois bury their dead instead of cremating them. This is because of the strict prohibition on the felling of trees, the wood of which is required for cremation.  Some of us tried our hands at the potting wheel and at carpet weaving.

One of the most fabulous experiences was the candle lit dinner in a 6th century stepwell in Narlai which we reached on ox carts in the dark. We dined under the stars to the tunes of an old musician and it was a beautiful evening. We went for a village walk accompanied by a local, peeking into local schools and homes. Our heritage hotel in Narlai was exquisite with each room more beautiful than the next.

We also enjoyed the dawn leopard safari and rural ramble with delicious masala chai and home made cookies and climbed a hill to watch the sun rise on the horizon while tracking leopards.

In the cities we soaked up the magnificent palaces, forts and architectural treasures and boy did we shop till we dropped. What stamina the girls had!

At the end of the tour we split into two groups as half went to Agra and half went to heavenly Goa. Our resort at the bottom of a cliff on a remote, unspoiled beach was the perfect spot for us to relax and chill to the sounds of the waves. We even got fit there making our way up and down the cliff to yoga with a spectacular view! Dinner on the beach and wading through the deep lagoon were added bonuses to a fabulous stay!
